College Football: MTU grid team ranked 16th preseason

HOUGHTON - The Michigan Tech football team is ranked 16th in Street & Smith's 2005 Football Yearbook Division II Preseason Top 25. The Huskies return 10 starters from last year's 9-2 squad that ranked 11th in the final Division II American Football Coaches' Association Poll and recorded its first-ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship and a berth into the 2004 NCAA Division II Playoffs.
Defending national champion Valdosta State landed the top spot in the preseason poll, while Pittsburg State (2), GLIAC-rival Grand Valley State (3), North Dakota (4) and East Stroudsburg (5) round out the top five.
Michigan Tech opens the 2005 football campaign at the Superior Dome against Northern Michigan University in the annual battle for the Miner's Cup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 27.
